Opinion on Cutbacks of teachers and double-dippers
I want to get some other views and opinions about people who have worked in the school system and retired but now they are back working in the school system. These people are receiving their full retirement benefits plus receiving a full paycheck from where they left off from the system. The system is furloughing teachers and other workers but if they would stop these retirees from double dipping then I and some of my coworkers feel that some of these furloughs would not have to be taken. The system is taking from us while others who are retired are not really being affected at all. We feel that the system is totally misconstrued. They are making the wealthy even wealthier and making the little people suffer from the decisions that they are making. In Fulton County, we did not receive a pay raise, our insurance increased, plus the system took three days from teachers without pay, cut the paraprofessionals ten days, the principals were cut five days, and assistant principals were cut twenty days. "Governor Purdue" is still cutting the funds for education. Why cut the education fund when our children are the future. Georgia is already one of the states that are behind in education but he still insists on cutting the education budget.

Karen,
ReplyDeleteI also teach in Georgia in Newton County and definitely have experienced your pain when it comes to furlough days! We have been without pay a total of 9 days this year and we think that two more will come. Not to mention the snow day we have today, I am sure will magically become one. I agree with your thoughts on the double dipping so to speak that retirees are doing throughout the state. We actually have 4 at my high school and it is ridiculous. One is a retired teacher that is covering for a woman on maternity leave, the thing is she is still certified and actually gets paid more than me to come to school every day, sit at a desk, never make a lesson plan ever, and not have to go to meetings or anything else like that. Another one is an assistant principal who has retired 3 different times in the last 5 years. I feel like he is Michael Jordan or something, he is retired and getting paid for that and still receiving benefits because he helps us out part time 3 days a week with discipline. Our discipline isn’t that bad and I would rather do it myself and get paid for the days that I come to school! With the economy the way it is and budget cut back something really needs to be done to stop this from happening anymore!

In Michigan we think the funding in regards to education is bad but in Georgia things are really bad!!! It would be very frustrating to have to sacrafice money on the expense of others. Is there anything that your teachers union can do to stop this? Could your unions come together to made negotiations?
ReplyDeleteI understand your frustration. Hopefully our country as a whole can come up with a solution to fix the financial woes that many of the states are experiencing. Maybe they could also come up with ideas to fix the entire economy as well!
